Overwhelmed By The Business of Chiropractic?

You graduated, started a business, and expected to be successful. Many health care practitioners work for someone else, but if you are working for yourself then you need to wear both a clinician’s hat and a business owners hat. Michael Gerber talks about the roles of entrepreneur, manager, and technician that are necessary for a small business owner. As someone that loves seeing patients, you may always be a technician, but that doesn’t mean you get to ignore the other aspects of being in business. You also need to manage, and that means creating and maintaining systems. Your systems need to have double checks and need to be assigned as a responsibility to someone in your practice. Once you realize that your entrepreneurial seizure (as Gerber put it) isn’t going to pass, it’s time to take control of your business. Create, codify, and execute is the mantra that we suggest for you. Work ‘on’, not just ‘in’, your practice, and you will find success.

Running a practice is no joke, and understand that your practice is a reflection of you. Organization doesn’t come naturally to everyone, and if your office protocols are in shambles, you will need to increase the attention you give to planning and execution. There are many times that business owners simply ‘let things go’ because they don’t want to rock the boat. An employee that isn’t performing well has never been fired too early, but if it is your lack of systems that don’t allow for your team’s optimal performance, then you need to start by working ‘on’ your business.

The first step we suggest for you is to begin having weekly ‘Perfect Practice’ meetings with your team. Pick things to go through in the time you’ve set aside – this could be the way a patient file is put together, how to book a new patient over the phone, patient flow through the office, etc. Give your team permission to bring things to the meeting that they feel need optimization. Engage your entire team to help streamline systems, and you’ll see an improvement in procedure execution.
Self Care
