President's Message - Dr. Jeff Scholten

According to Confucius, “There are three methods to attain wisdom. First, by intuition, which is noblest; second, by imitation, which is easiest; third, by experience, which is the bitterest.” One of a number of benefits of working together as a group is reducing the bitterness associated with individually existing on our own island and learning by experience.

My practice grew by mimicking others, through trial and error, and by innovating. If your idea of a successful practice stops with imitation, you will always by definition be, at most, second best; as you will never develop beyond your mentor. Your development as a business owner should never end, and your business should gradually become more sophisticated as you layer on new success strategies.

None of us can bring UC to the world by ourselves. Our grandchildren’s grandchildren’s ability to receive a specific upper cervical adjustment is not guaranteed. In fact, it is up to us - you and me. What we have done, what we do, and what we will contribute will either allow for this miraculous gift to be available, or not.

The second inescapable truth that we recognize as UCHC, is that together we can do more that we can do alone. This last piece is only true if we all contribute more that we take. This principle is one for life, business, and any relationship you find yourself in. How can you give more? By giving more, you will receive more, if you do so selflessly. I want to learn from you and you can learn from me, but it will only be ideal if we contribute our knowledge to each other generously. We can create tremendous things if we stir all of our knowledge together and see what we can create together.

Consuming experiences and information is crucial for growth and development. Within UCHC we have the capacity together to create something that has never been created before and grow UC in an exponential manner.

In the coming months, we will be launching a new arm of UCHC, one that a number of us have been working on for a few months. It is an arm that is meant to assist practice growth in a personalized manner, providing strategic steps for each of us to target success. It is very exciting and should increase the ability for UCHC to bring value to the upper cervical community significantly.

I thank each of you for your contributions of your time, your talent, and your treasure; the future is bright!

Jeff Scholten
From the President - Dr. Jeff Scholten

April is upon us; as we move from the darkness of winter to spring’s promise of renewal and warmth, we must remember that there are billions of people unaware of their own restorative capacity. Upper cervical care provides a link to that innate capability within a human being. The responsibility lies with us, and by optimizing our practices’ success, we shed this light in our community.

Remember, we are stronger together, and we need to engage as fully as possible with the process of our own practice success. As the first quarter of the year draws to a close, reflect on the achievements conceptualized in your Strategic Plan. Is the care you are delivering to your patients optimized? How is your practice performing? Is your team elevated by your leadership? Are you pushing hard enough to meet your targets and goals? To help you with all of these things and more, a smorgasbord of potential practice building information at UCHCcommunity.com is at your disposal; a fabulous coordinated website in UpperCervicalCare.com, monthly masterminding opportunities, and online boot-camps (both past and future available) to name a few - the resources are there for you to optimize your practice.

This year’s September corporate planning meeting will be combined with an in-person mastermind boot-camp. This exciting opportunity will be exclusively available to UCHC members and affiliates; we hope you will attend and benefit from the camaraderie that having a shared vision allows. Individually we can change our community, but together we can change the world. Thank you for being a part of this vision!

Jeff Scholten
From the President - Dr. Jeff Scholten

A warm welcome to all those who have joined us in the past month! Thank you for adding your unique skills to our team as we work to optimize the Business of Upper Cervical.

“Why haven’t I heard about this until now?” How many times have each of us been asked this question by a patient? It is our responsibility to change the future, but making a dent in this story will require your ongoing effort. Whether you are committing your time, your talent, your treasure, or a portion of all three, by working together we will create a better future.

All hands are on deck and we continue to move forward developing new layers within UCHC. In the past month, exciting progress has continued in many areas of UCHC. One highlight is our Friends of Upper Cervical Program; Friends of UC will be available by summer to assist practices with enrolling advocates from their patient bases and engaging those advocates both with each other, and for our cause. Lead by Dr. Kerry Johnson and UC Advocate extra-ordinaries’ Greg Buchanan and Billy Doherty, this program is sure to be a powerful addition to all of our practices.

By ourselves we can change our community, but together we can change the world. UCHC provides the sandbox for you to play in while you build your business, increase your profits, and enjoy your life. This sandbox isn’t passive; you can play as much or as little as you want, but you need to play for yourself, your community, and your children’s children.

It’s great to be on your team - the work continues!

Creating a Greater Awareness of Upper Cervical Care

2/23/2016

Billy Doherty and family
My name is Billy Doherty. I am not a chiropractor but I have been involved with the Upper Cervical profession for the past 10 years as the marketing director for UCHC. Upper Cervical changed my life (and my family's - pictured above) and I am driven to create a greater awareness of the best-kept secret in health care. For this to happen, the UC community has got to come together, regardless of technique, organization and ego. Sound like something you heard before?

The UC community is small, and during the course of my involvement there has been great effort put forth by numerous organizations to unite our profession to expand awareness and gain critical mass. Progress has been made, but we still have a long way to go. Every doctor is busy working “IN” their practices and agrees UNITY is a great idea, but that seems to be where the idea of UNITY runs out of steam. Back in practice, the focus is on patient care and the effort to UNITE our profession takes a back seat. Until now, there has not been an organization that provides easily implemented opportunities for you to assist with the unification of the profession with minimal effort on your part.

Upper Cervical Health Centers (UCHC) has evolved over the past 10 years and is no longer the franchise model that most relate it to. We are thankful for the members who have grown with us. Regardless of your involvement with UCHC in the past, EVERYONE we meet agrees with our Vision, “By ourselves we can change our community but TOGETHER we can change the world.”

UCHC is about the BUSINESS of upper cervical chiropractic, and we provide the sandbox for you to share your best practices, learn with others, and mastermind with colleagues instead of being left to invent the wheel on your own. UCHC now operates as a membership based model and has a team of experienced professionals and doctors who are dedicated to sharing business ideas and strategies for the benefit of the group.

Lead by President, Dr. Jeff Scholten, along with board members David Glavonjic, Dr. Julie Hunt, Dr. Kerry Johnson, Greg Buchanan, Dr. Ray Drury, Dr. Thad Vuagniaux & Dr. Joey Miles, the future could not be brighter. I feel like we are finally in a position to move the profession forward.

One tremendous benefit of membership is a listing on the newly designed UpperCervicalCare.com; this patient education resource is worth the price of membership. There are currently too many social media posts asking where doctors are located, and this website is the solution. The more doctors we can get listed on the website, the greater potential for greater global awareness. Check it out at www.uppercervicalcare.com.

UCHC offers a variety of cost effective membership levels based on your practice’s needs and budget; there is something for everyone. Visit UCHCcommunity.com for a complete list of options and pricing for each level. Please note that there is no long-term commitment - we offer month-to-month membership allowing you to control your experience.

If you have any questions for me, please send me an email at billy.doherty@uchcenters.com.

I look forward to serving you and finally taking Upper Cervical to the masses!

Yours in health,
Billy Doherty

Why I Joined Upper Cervical Health Centers - Dr. Kerry Johnson

Picture
I am in my 30th year of practicing upper cervical. I was not very good at the business or patient management side of practice and my upper cervical technique group (NUCCA) focused on the science and art. At the brink of failure, my only choice was to seek help from a management company. Since then, I have shelled out boatloads of money acquire the information I needed to become successful. I have been fortunate to build a very successful practice and I am grateful to all those who have helped me over the years.

Being an idea person, I have often wondered if there was a way for successful upper cervical doctors to collaborate in passing on the business and patient management side of practice to those who desperately need it without asking for their first born. When Dr. Amy Holliday told me that Upper Cervical Health Centers had moved from a franchise to a membership model I had to find out more. I vetted UCHC for several months and then decided to jump in with both feet. I became convinced that UCHC is the way to fulfill this little passion of mine to help other doctors become successful so that Upper Cervical becomes the force it needs to be. There is strength in numbers but an upper cervical community of highly successful doctors is a much greater force.

I signed up as a Premiere Affiliate myself 6 months ago and it's already giving me a good return. If you’re wondering if UCHC can help you please shoot me an email at kerry@johnsonspinalcare.com and put UCHC in the subject line.

Thank you!
Kerry Johnson, D

Is your Success a Dream or a Goal?
Recently my wife told me about a blog she read that outlined a formative moment in boxing great Evander Holyfield’s mental development. It spoke to the moment he recognized the difference between a goal and a dream. Read about it HERE.

Dreaming and using your imagination are wonderful and often underutilized skills. I encourage you to develop both; I received this link from my cousin earlier in the week that may help you understand how powerful this can be. http://www.proctorgallagherinstitute.com/6179/develop-your-imagination

In business, however, dreams and imagination have to be followed by concrete goals to help them develop in a purposeful manner. A practitioner may dream about having a large number of new patients or retaining their current patients longer but may not know how to achieve that. When we speak of retention and marketing, PVA (Patient Visit Average) and ROI (Return on Investment) need to be calculated to understand the current circumstance so that the dream can become reality.

PVA
To truly understand what a PVA means to retention, you need to know how frequently a patient is typically seen by the clinician in that office. There are other retention measures you should simultaneously monitor:
  1. The number of people that complete your initial period of care.
  2. The percentage of these people that still have an appointment after one year of care.

ROI
In marketing, the cost of an event creates the ROI needed for the event to be financially successful. I suggest you target a 10x ROI for each direct marketing event (like a screening or health show). This is a short term strategy; if the screening opportunity costs $1000, then in the following months you should ideally recover $10,000 in revenue to consider it a successful investment.

Have fun while you build your practice, increase your profits, and enjoy your life!

Grow your Revenue
Revenue = NP x OVA x PVA
Let’s talk chiropractic algebra for a moment. Don’t be scared; math can be fun and using basic metrics with the right equations can help ensure that your success is not accidental.
  • NP – The number of patients that receive a first adjustment.
  • RPV – Return Patient Visits
  • OVA = Revenue/RPV
(Office Visit Average) How much people spend, on average, on each visit in your office.
  • PVA = RPV/NP
(Patient Visit Average) A measure of retention indicating the average number of times a patient returns to your office.
To grow your revenue you can increase new patients, your prices, or your patient retention. I recommend that you have at least one defined practice-building strategy for each area, but at the very least monitor these numbers and share them with your team regularly.

Have fun while you build your practice, increase your profits, and enjoy your life!

President's Message - Dr. Jeff Scholten

Jeff Scholten
It’s been fun working on the Business of Upper Cervical with you! November has been an exciting month for UCHC: With the launching of our Mastermind Circles, the redesigned Upper Cervical Care website, and our weekly Practice IQ blogs, a number of important projects have been débuted. I am so proud of what UCHC’s leadership has been able to accomplish this year, especially in the month following our very successful Strategic Planning retreat.

Together we have been able to craft the beginnings of a great future, but it hasn’t been all smooth sailing. Getting beyond past hurts takes tremendous character, and I applaud each of you for what you have accomplished thus far. There is still much to do, and now is the time for us to start pulling on the oars together with maximal effort. I hope we can push ourselves to give as much as we can to this movement at this critical juncture. Through this spirit of cooperation, UCHC will hold value for its participants and have a chance at the bigger picture of creating new practices and changing the world.

I am passionate about bringing this vision of a home, where upper cervical chiropractors can sit around a kitchen table and collaborate on the business of upper cervical, to our subset of the profession. We need successful chiropractic practices; we need to help our each other grow our practices, increase our profitability, and have fun participating within our community. Have a wonderful December, let’s keep this going!

Mastermind Circles
As part of our commitment to be engaged in enhancing The Business of Upper Cervical, UCHC is excited about our peer-to-peer coaching program, Mastermind Circles. This innovative coaching program will allow for the generation of business ideas and solutions as well as foster connections within our community.

Each month UCHC will publish a unique pairing between premier affiliates/members. These doctors have the opportunity to connect during the month for a 30-60 minute call focused on what they are working on in their business – the good, the bad, the ugly and the innovative. Member doctors will get the opportunity to talk with, discuss, vent, brainstorm, and mastermind business with a different doctor each month as a new pairing is facilitated. Click HERE to see the December 2015 Coaching Connections.

This new format should create and strengthen bonds, create new ideas, help us feel connected within our organization, and allow the space for us to work on our businesses together.  We hope you find this prospect as exciting as we do, and we look forward to hearing the gems of wisdom gleaned from these interactions.

Sincerely,

Welcome New Member, Dr. Kyle Collins

Kyle Collins
Dr. Kyle Collins graduated from Arizona State University. He then pursued his passion and received his Doctorate from the Life Chiropractic College West in the California Bay area. Later he then continued his education in Upper Cervical Care.

Dr. Collins believes there is nothing more fulfilling for him than to see his patients lives changed by empowering them to take responsibility of their own health. “As a Chiropractor my job is to educate patients how to maximize their health potential. Allowing them to express health the way their body was intended. Its a lifestyle… Its not a gimic, pill, potion or lotion… We create long lasting true health changes that allow people to not only feel better, but to function better. The common perception is that if we are symptom free then we must be healthy… Nothing can be further from the truth.. I believe that is one of the main reasons our healthcare system is in the position it is today. Our model of health and how to achieve it is wrong. We need a new model. One that’s actually based on the workings of the human body that if embraced has the ability to change your life and the people around you lives”.

Dr. Kyle Collins is the youngest of five siblings. Dr. Collins is married to Cortney and they are expecting their first child in Dec. 2015. In his free time he loves to spend time with his family, cook healthy meals and golf!

Community Connection - November 2015

Community Connection

From the President - Dr. Jeff Scholten

Picture
Although by ourselves we can change our community, together we can change the world. This was the vision that UCHC began with, and in late October UCHC leadership met in Folly Beach on the edge of Charleston, SC to work on 2016’s Strategic Plan. Our dedicated group accomplished a tremendous amount in the 10 hours we were sequestered in the board room. The planning session was filled with hard work, great conversation, and a sense of camaraderie that helped clarify where we're headed. It also sharpened our resolve to share our community with UC Chiropractic by supporting enhanced business acumen. I’m pleased to report that our vision is strong, and our plan is attainable.

UCHC is about the business of upper cervical chiropractic. We will focus our efforts on providing business solutions to UC Chiropractors, especially those who want to build their practice, increase their profitability, and enjoy their life. We re-affirmed that within this ‘business’ niche we will continue to value and market the idea that "Our Strength is Our Community."

Some of the highlights from our 2016 Strategic Plan include:
  1. A new and exciting method of Peer to Peer Coaching will be engaged as ‘Mastermind Circles’ and implemented immediately.
  2. The new UC Care website should be live by November 15; with this launch and the enhanced benefits available, Basic Level Pricing has shifted to $75 monthly.
  3. Members/Premier Affiliates that recruit new participants will be credited the amount paid in the first month as a bonus towards their membership fees.

Our 2016 Strategic Planning meeting was a great success because of the enthusiasm and dedication of the participants. As we move through these next steps of implementing our re-envisioned model, keep in mind Margaret Mead's statement, "Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it's the only thing that ever has."

Thank you to everyone who participated in person, and to all of you who couldn't be there, your support and encouragement allowed us to succeed this past weekend. I look forward to seeing our plan in action!

Onward,
Jeff

Community Connection

From the President - Dr. Jeff Scholten

Jeff Scholten
The tragic truth is that many people are suffering from health challenges without the knowledge of a potential solution. As upper cervical chiropractors we can help, but we continue to be the Best Kept Secret in Health Care. How many people can you help personally? The answer, regardless of the number, is not enough. Less than a handful of upper cervical chiropractors exist in Asia and Europe; what about Australia, South America or the subcontinent of India? Have you tried referring to a colleague in Mexico recently? I did, and couldn’t find anyone. We have much work to do; the need is great but simultaneously the business opportunity is tremendous. Can you see a way through? We have a model, but we need all hands on deck.

UCHC is committed to the idea of collaborative business excellence and is creating opportunities for you to engage on a larger stage. Connect with us, help grow the UCHC brand or keep your own practice identity, and know that your money is being well spent. Costs are low and the benefits large. Get clear deliverables today and be involved with taking UC to the world; our time is now! Join us as we make the assessment of the upper cervical spine a first step in health care within our lifetime.
