The first and most important step in your strategic planning is to express your core values. The basis of the majority of my current Strategic Planning structure was inspired by an excellent book written on this subject by Vern Harnish, Mastering the Rockefeller Habits.
Your Core Values are your principles; they are how you believe the world should be regarding the topic at hand. These statements are the first to be revisited during planning sessions. Everything else in your strategic plan needs to be congruent with these statements. In our office, from year to year there isn’t much change to these statements during our annual strategic planning meeting; we might add a sentence that we hadn’t recognized previously, or we might revise the language to be more precise, eloquent, or descriptive.
